About Lungcanceronline.org
Lungcanceronline.org was created in March 1999 by Karen
Parles, a lung cancer survivor and librarian, as a comprehensive,
annotated directory to reliable Internet resources for patients
and families. The aim of Lungcanceronline.org is to facilitate
the time consuming and often frustrating process of learning about
lung cancer, treatment options and support services. Lungcanceronline.org
is cited as a leading website for lung cancer in medical journals,
cancer support publications and the media. (See "Awards
& Recognitions" for further information.) We welcome
suggestions for
how to improve Lungcanceronline.org.

About the Editor - Karen Parles,
MLS
Karen is a librarian, wife and mother who was diagnosed with lung
cancer in 1998 at the age of 38. Following recovery from her treatment,
Karen created Lungcanceronline.org and served extensively
as a lung cancer advocate for the National Cancer Institute and
other cancer advocacy and support organizations. In February 2002,
Karen founded The Lung Cancer
Online Foundation.
Karen's experience with lung cancer began with an incidental finding
on an x-ray. She had no symptoms or risk factors for lung cancer.
After an exploratory thoracotomy in January 1998, she was diagnosed
with advanced NSCLC. Her cancer presented as a small lung nodule
with pleural involvement, no distant metastases and negative nodes
via mediastinoscopy. After chemotherapy and surgery to remove her
right lung, Karen enjoyed a remission of 4 1/2 years. Her cancer
recurred in August 2002 and has been successfully treated with chemotherapy,
radiofrequency ablation (RFA) therapy and radiation. If you would

Karen has worked previously for Smithsonian Press, Time-Life Books,
Houghton-Mifflin, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Frick Collection.
She received her library degree from Long Island University and
following her lung cancer diagnosis focused her professional activities
on medical librarianship. Karen attends ongoing CE courses, including
evidence-based medicine for librarians, and is a member of the Medical
Library Association. A 1981 graduate of Williams College, Karen
was honored by her alma mater in 2001 with a Bicentennial medal
for her work in support of people with lung cancer. In 2004, the
National Coalition of Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) presented Karen
with the Catherine Logan Award for Service to Survivorship. Along
with Dr. Joan Schiller, she is the author of 100 Questions &
Answers About Lung Cancer, published in 2003 by Jones &
Bartlett Publishers.

timeliness
(is the content current? is site updated regularly?)
for
websites: source of funding; privacy policy; contact/feedback mechanism
duplication
