ASCO 2006 abstract reports on a study that concludes that in smokers with adenocarcinoma, a high level of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is frequently predictive of advanced disease. [5/06]

Serum CYFRA 21-1 in Advanced NSCLC (PubMed)
Study reported in the May issue of Clinical Cancer Research found that in patients with advanced NSCLC, the initial level of serum CYFRA appeared to provide more prognostic information than clinical stage. In addition, it found that a drop of greater than 27% in CYRFA after one cycle of chemotherapy adds prognostic information, so that this threshold appears to be an early measure of response to chemotherapy. Decline in Serum CEA & CYFRA 21-1 During Chemotherapy Predicts Objective Response and Survival in Advanced NSCLC (PubMed)
Prospective study of changes in serums levels of CEA and CYFRA 21-1 in patients with advanced NSCLC receiving first-line chemotherapy published in the November 13, 2006 issue of CANCER. The authors, A. Ardizzoni et al., concluded that CEA and CYFRA 21-1 responses appeared to be reliable surrogate markers of chemotherapy efficacy in patients with advanced NSCLC.
