Targretin
Fails to Meet Primary or Secondary Endpoints in Pivotal Trials for NSCLC
(Ligand)
Press release announcing that Targretin (bexarotene) did not
meet the endpoints of improved overall survival and projected two-year
survival in Phase III randomized trials. The studies (SPIRIT I & SPIRIT
II) were designed to evaluate whether adding Targretin to front-line cisplatin/vinorelbine
or carboplatin/paclitasel chemotherapy extends the survival of patients
with advanced NSCLC (stage IIIB with pleural effusion or stage IV). Targretin
will continue to be evaluated for its potential to benefit NSCLC patients
in the second or third line settings. [3/05]
Emerging
Role of Rexinoids in NSCLC: Focus on Bexarotene (The
Oncologist)
Explains the rationale for using rexinoids to treat cancer. Reviews past
and current studies of bexarotene (Targretin) for the treatment of NSCLC.
Concludes that Targretin shows promise for the treatment of NSCLC, citing
the survival benefit demonstrated in early studies as well as the generally
acceptable level of toxicity - specific known side effects are discussed.
Notes that results from the ongoing Phase III trials will elucidate the
role of Targretin in the treatment of NSCLC. [1/05]
